In 2021, the City of Grande Prairie launched an energy-saving initiative, which included installing two 333 kW Combined Heat and Power (CHP) capable Flex Turbines® at the Grande Prairie Eastlink Centre.
Grants from Alberta’s Municipal Climate Change Action Centre (MCCAC) Program enabled the installation of the two units to meet the energy requirements for the 450,000-square-foot community recreation facility. Electricity generated by these units displaces grid electricity, and heat reclaimed from the generation process increases efficiency, resulting in utility savings while also reducing GHG emissions.
The Flex Turbines are an ideal fit for the project in terms of both engineering and technical requirements. With a 99% uptime and support from a dedicated team of highly skilled local technicians, the Flex Turbines were selected for the project following a thorough qualification process and evaluation.
As a result, the Eastlink Centre offsets approximately 4,999,845 kWh of grid electricity per year and reduces GHG emissions by over 849 tons of carbon dioxide per year. The City can expect significant energy savings and an estimated reduction in energy costs of more than $335,900 per year.
